5 reasons to love Sam Smith

feat-sam-smith

Ever since he rose to fame back in 2012 when he featured on Disclosure’s massive hit ‘Latch’, we have been huge fans of Sam Smith here at Average Janes!

Now with four Grammy’s to his name, and with cyberspace renaming the awards show to the “Sammy’s”, the 22-year-old from London is catapulting his way to stardom.

So here are our top 5 reasons why everyone should love Sam Smith:

1.GRAMMY CELEBRATIONS

Imagine this: you are 22, in LA, having just won four Grammy’s…it’s time to glug a bottle of champagne right? Not for Sam! The singer opted out of heading to an A-list party and instead went to chill out at his label’s house in the hills.

Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres about his low-key celebrations he said: “I flew my mum and my dad and my little sisters out and we all had some In-N-Out burgers and that’s what we did.” …We kinda wish we were part of the Smith family right about now.

2.COVER SONGS

Whilst the man is an absolute genius at writing and singing his own songs, he has also performed a whole bunch of beautiful cover songs. Nothing excites us more than when we hear he will be back in Radio One’s Live Lounge.

From Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, to Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man, Smith illustrates his exceptional vocal range and distinct singing voice. He has also sung a breathtakingly superb version of Whitney Houston’s How Will I Know.

3.ROLE MODEL

If there is one reason why Sam Smith should be commended, it is for his willingness to openly discuss and let people know about his private life. In May 2014, Smith revealed to the public he was gay, noting that his hit album In The Lonely Hour was about an unrequited relationship he had with a man.

Alongside this, he has also publicly acknowledged his weight battles and that he struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder. In an interview with 4Music he said: “I actually have OCD really bad, and it’s getting a bit worse at the moment. I have to check taps… before I leave the house, to make sure I’ve checked everything in case it floods.”

4.AWARD ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES

During Smith’s Grammy acceptance speech for Record of the Year, after claiming it was “the best night of my life” he thanked the one person who made it all possible…“Just a quick one — I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys!” Karma is a b*tch!

5.IN THE LONELY HOUR

Released in May 2014, Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour reached number one in the UK Albums Chart and in our hearts. It was the second biggest selling album of 2014 in the US, behind 1989 by Taylor Swift. It boasts some of our favourite singles of 2014 including his collaboration with Naughty Boy entitled ‘La La La’ and the huge hit ‘Money On My Mind.’
