The Best Things About Winter

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again already, but with less than two weeks left in November winter is well and truly underway. We at Average Janes couldn’t be happier about this news. Why, you might ask? Because there are so many fun and lovely things about winter!

Don’t believe us? Don’t worry, we’ve compiled a list to swing you around to our way of thinking.

Winter – the Best Bits

So, stop lamenting the lack of sunshine, grab your winter warmers, and cosy up while we remind you of the best bits about winter.

1. Open Fires

Is there anything nicer than cosying up in front of an open fire or stove? There is something so comforting about it. Lights off, fire blazing, and a movie on the telly – pure bliss!

2. Hot Drinks

Okay, so technically you can have these any time of the year, but they are so much more satisfying when it’s bitter cold outside. Indulging in a sweet hot chocolate laden with marshmallows is the perfect winter treat. Not to mention Starbucks and Costa rolling out their Christmas cups and seasonal treats!

3. Cold Crisp Evenings

Sure, we all love soaking up the sun, but wrapping up and going for a walk during winter – when the air is cold and crisp – can be just as enjoyable. Even more so when the pavements are strewn with colourful leaves at the end of autumn.

4. Winter Warmers

Finally it’s time to ditch the bikinis and shorts and jump back into cosy knits. Hats, scarves and gloves galore please! Let’s not forget the fluffy socks, onesies and dressing gowns either. Ah, instant happiness.

5. Boots

They are so great we have a whole other post dedicated to our faves! This time of year is perfect; you can finally start wearing cute chelsea boots and knee highs again. Plus, you don’t have to worry about keeping your toes painted (your secret is safe with us!).

6. The Lights

A lot of people complain about the dark evenings during winter. Yes it can be a bit disheartening getting up and returning from work when it’s dark, but think about all of the pretty lights! This time of year the streets are just twinkling with happiness. You only have to take a stroll down Oxford Street in London to know what we’re talking about.

7. Christmas

Undeniably the best thing about winter. These days, once Halloween is over the countdown officially begins. December has to be the most exciting month. It’s busy and everyone is genuinely full of cheer. The naff jumpers make their annual appearance, as do the advent calendars. The music starts, the markets appear. No matter what age you are, you begin counting the sleeps until Santa’s arrival. How can you not love winter purely for this reason alone?

8. The possibility of snow

Granted it’s always a slim chance, seeing as we mostly just get rain and more rain, but still – the hope is there. The chance of snow means you can relive your childhood for a little bit by building snowmen and having snowball fights.

9. Not having to shave your legs

Let’s not pretend we haven’t all done this at some stage or another throughout the winter months. There’s no law that says you should stop, but you are most likely going to be spending the majority of November, December and January in tights…we’re just saying.

10. The colours

Winter is all about embracing the dark reds, deep purples and burgundies. We love a strong lippy and a dark nail polish to compliment the season. The pastels can wait until next summer.
