Forget about listening to music on your commute to work, these days it’s all about catching up on the best podcasts. Here at Janes we love a podcast and this isn’t the first time we’ve written about our favourites. But this time around we are focussing on the best ones for a long work commute.
Whether you’d prefer to listen to a celebrity talking about their life, a couple of wonderful journalists talking pop culture or a true crime podcast, here’s a bunch of our favourites:
The format for Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs is simple: a guest is invited by Kirsty Young to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island, as well as a book of their choice and a luxury item.
During the interview they explain their choices and discuss key moments in their lives, people and events that have influenced and inspired them and brought them to where they are today.
The radio show-turned-podcast has been around since 1942 and over the years has welcomed a plethora of different celebrities, from Margaret Thatcher to David Beckham.
One of our favourite episodes to date was that of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, who shares touching memories around her youth; opens up about her husband’s tragic death; and discusses why she’s all for female empowerment.
A vast selection of the episodes, including David Beckham’s and Sheryl Sandberg’s are available to download on iTunes.
A weekly pop-culture/news podcast presented by journalists Dolly Alderton & Pandora Sykes – the former co-hosts of The Pandolly Podcast.
Think of The High Low as a mixture of high and low brow culture, intertwined with a top line of 10 recent news stories with an intro by DJ CJ, some brilliantly answered questions from listeners and a lot of laughs along the way.
A new episode is available every Wednesday on iTunes and it will no doubt make your commute a lot more enjoyable.
If true crime stories are more your thing, then you’ll absolutely love Sword and Scale. This podcast is an internet radio show and website covering the dark underworld of crime and the criminal justice system’s response to it.
Launched on January 1st, 2014, Sword and Scale feature stories of murder, abduction, rape and even more bizarre forms of crime. It covers everything from 911 calls to court testimony, interviews with victims and sometimes with perpetrators give listeners a 360 degree look at the entire story.
It’s one of the darker podcasts on this list, but if you want to take your mind off your commute and become engrossed in real-life crime stories, this is the podcast for you.
New episodes are available on iTunes every week.
