Time Run: ‘The Celestial Chain’ escape game review

If there’s one thing London is great for, it’s escape games. So we were overjoyed to be invited down to test out Time Run’s latest venture ‘The Celestial Chain.’

Before we go any further, some of you might be wondering what on earth i’m talking about when I say ‘escape game’. It’s essentially a physical adventure game in which players are locked in a room and have to use things in the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit. So think the Crystal Maze meets Sherlock Holmes. It may sound a bit ridiculous, but trust us, it’s loads of fun!

With it’s huge production values, Time Run is regarded among the escape game community as one of the best escape games in the capital. So you can just imagine how excited we were to be asked to try out their latest game The Celestial Chain.

Its plot is pretty simple: ‘A rogue goddess, once imprisoned, has broken free of The Celestial Chain. Now, liberated from her shackles, she moves through time, spreading destruction from era to era.’ Essentially you and your fellow gamers need to travel through five time periods, playing games and solving puzzles to gather artefacts that will save the world. It may sound easy, but this game is difficult even for the brainiest Janes.

Now, we don’t want to give away too much information about the actual game itself, but for those of you who are huge escape game fans, it might not be what you’d typically expect.

This is a brand new game format where you and your team (of 4-5 people) only have a certain amount of time in each room before you MUST move onto the next. Whilst this does keep things interesting, it also gets a little infuriating if you are seconds away from cracking a puzzle and you have to leave it behind. Admittedly, two of us in our group of 4 were not Celestial Chain first timers, but even with the extra help of prior knowledge of puzzles, we still didn’t manage to get on the leader board! Maybe next time.
