10 Cinema Picks for 2017

Now we’ve said farewell to the shitstorm that was 2016, we are taking a look at things to look forward to this year. One of those being the onslaught of incredible films coming to our movie screens.

From a musical comedy-drama film that’s set to take home a whole bunch of Oscars to the return of the Trainspotting crew, we take a look at some of the best cinema picks for the upcoming year.

10. FIFTY SHADES DARKER

Kicking off at number 10 with our guilty pleasure, we can’t help but be excited about what the second Fifty Shades instalment has in store for us.

From the trailer it seems everything is going pretty peachy between Anastasia and Christian until an old flame comes back to haunt their lives…well it is supposed to be ‘darker’ after all.

UK release date: February 10

9. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Cue the nostalgia! Ah the childhood memories. We couldn’t think of a better Belle than Emma Watson, so hopefully she’ll do us proud in the role. At first we weren’t entirely on board with the live action Beauty and the Beast remake, but seeing the trailer we are sold. Plus Dan Stevens as the beast!? Yes please! Well, after he’s transformed, that is.

UK release date: March 17

8. DUNKIRK

If anyone wants to know what Harry Styles’ acting skills are like, this is the film for you in 2017.

The epic action thriller will tell the story of the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940, during World War II. Directed by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk also stars: Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh.

UK release date: July 21

7. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

You might want to bring a pack of tissues along with you to this film, particularly if the music in the trailer is anything to go by. You aren’t human if you can sit though Damien Rice’s music and not weep.

The film has already picked up Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Affleck, Best Supporting Actress for Williams and Best Screenplay, so we’re sure it’s going to be good.

6. KONG: SKULL ISLAND

This return to the King Kong franchise stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson what more could you want?

Plot wise, a team of explorers and soldiers in the early 1970’s are brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, unaware that they are crossing into the domain of monsters, as well as the mythic Kong, the “king” of the island.

UK release date: March 10

5. SPLIT

If psychological horror films are more your bag, go to the cinema this January to check out the nightmare inducing Split, starring James McAvoy.

From what we can tell from the trailer, McAvoy abducts a group of girls and keeps them in his cellar. As they attempt to work out how to free themselves, they find out he suffers from multiple personality disorder.

UK release date: January 20

4. WONDER WOMAN

2016’s Batman V Superman was an absolute shambles for DC. So what do they need? A Wonder Woman in the form of Gal Gadot kicking ass.

In terms of the plot, the Amazon princess Diana, (aka Wonder Woman) is living on the island of Themyscira when she meets American military pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) when he is washed ashore. After learning from him about the ongoing events of World War I, she leaves her home to bring an early end to the war.

UK release date: June 2

3. T2 Trainspotting

Our hopes are ridiculously high for this film because we never thought Danny Boyle would return to do a sequel. But, will it live up to the greatness of the 1996 film? Well, if the trailer is anything to go by, we think it will.

The entire crew are back including Rent Boy, (Ewan McGregor) Spud, (Ewen Bremner) Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Franco (Robert Carlyle). The plot sees Rent Boy returns to Scotland to make amends with his friends, Spud and Sick Boy, whilst avoiding the psychopathic Franco, who has recently been released from prison.

UK release date: January 27

2. JACKIE

Natalie Portman is back in what might be one of her most demanding performances yet.

The film follows Jackie Kennedy in the days when she was First Lady in the White House and her life following the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, in 1963. It focuses on Theodore H. White’s Life magazine interview with the widow at Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.

Portman has already been tipped to get the Best Actress Oscar this year, our fingers are crossed for you Natalie!

UK release date: January 20

1. LA LA LAND

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling meet again, but this time it’s not about Crazy Stupid Love or some Gangster Squad, we’re talking about falling in love in La La Land.

Directed by Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle, the film has already racked up a whole host of Oscar attention and Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Gosling, Best Actress for Stone, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Original Song. So yes, basically everything.
