Eurovision 2014 ~ Can UK Molly win?

With the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest coming up on Saturday, we thought we’d check out this year’s contender for the United Kingdom, Molly Alice Smitten-Downes, better known as her stage name ‘Molly’, like Cher without the auto tune.

On the 3rd March, the 27-year-old from Leicestershire was selected by the BBC to represent the nation at this years contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Molly wrote the 2014 song entry, ‘Children of the Universe’ herself and claimed that she was passionate about writing music that “breaks down political barriers”.

Whilst the song is pretty cheesy, it is also ridiculously catchy and a perfect choice for Eurovision, demanding on several occasions for ‘power to the people’. We just hope there is enough power to the people to pick up their phones and vote for Molly on Saturday night!

The official video for the entry was released on 23 April 2014, it features some funky dance moves from Molly and a whole load of gold glitter, probably borrowed from Kei$ha’s personal stash. She performed the song on The Graham Norton Show and since then we haven’t been able to stop singing the chorus and asking friends if they too are children of the universe.

The UK hasn’t won the Eurovision Song Contest since Katrina and the Waves told us to let Love Shine a Light back in 1997. Nonetheless, several bookies have placed Molly as one of the favourites to win this Saturday. We wish Molly all the luck and hope she can bring home the victory!

Check out the official video…

The grand final will be broadcast live on BBC One at 8pm on Saturday May 10.
