BAFTAs 2016: Winners List

For those of you who weren’t too busy being serenaded by James Blunt or unwrapping a huge teddy bear holding an ‘I Love You’ pillow, the 2016 BAFTA’s were a fitting replacement to V-Day. From cringe-worthy kiss-cam’s to Leonardo DiCaprio’s adorable acceptance speech, this year’s event was full of excitement.

As predicted, The Revenant stole the show winning a grand total of five awards. Leonardo DiCaprio took home the Leading Actor gong for his outstanding performance in the gritty drama and further cemented his chances of finally getting his first Oscar.

In his speech, he thanked one very special person in his life – his mum.

“One person without whom I wouldn’t be here today is my mother, and today is her birthday,” said Leo. “I did not grow up in privilege, I grew up in a very rough neighbourhood, and this person drove me three hours every day to show me a better life.”

He also won our hearts for paying tribute to British stars past and present, from Tom Courtenay through to his Revenant co-star Tom Hardy.

“I am absolutely humbled and absolutely honoured by this award tonight. I’ve been so influenced by British actors over the year. I remember watching Tom Courtenay in The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, all the way to Gary Oldman in State Of Grace, to the late Peter O’Toole.

“I want to thank one particular British actor, Tom Hardy. I want to thank you for your fierce loyalty, I could not have done this without you. I want to thank Chivo, the entire crew, the entire cast stood shoulder to shoulder through this process.

“And of course Alejandro – this film would not have been possible without your fierce commitment to authenticity every day, and thank you for becoming a real friend in this project.”Amy, about the life of the late Amy Winehouse, winning Best Documentary.
