5 reasons to clean your make up brushes

How often do you clean your make up brushes? Most women clean theirs less than once a month, if at all. We too can admit to being very lazy about cleaning our brushes, but not cleaning your tools is a really bad idea. Not only could it cause mass breakouts, but it could also lead to viral infections. If you are still wondering whether it’s worth the effort, we’ll give you 5 reasons why it definitely should be.

5. MUDDY MAKE UP

Are you finding that your foundation isn’t applying as smooth as it normally does? Well, it’s proven that dirty brushes will hinder the performance of your tools. You’ll know if your brush is clogged up if you’re finding that you have to work harder and take more strokes of the brush against the skin to try and get the application to be even and uniform. The solution: give your brush a well earned bath.

4. BREAKOUTS

For me this is one of the most important reasons to clean your brushes. Sweeping a dirt and bacteria-infested brush all over your face can cause an overload of microbes that your skin isn’t used to handling. It acts as the trigger for spots. If you’re noticing bumps popping up in the same spots on your face that you use your brushes and sponges on, it’s time to reevaluate your cleanliness.

3. BACTERIA BUILD UP

This is one of the most obvious, if you leave your brushes sitting on the side without washing them, they can accumulate bacteria, dust, and dirt. It’s really gross when you think about it. Allowing dirty brushes to become breeding grounds for disgusting should be enough to make you clean them. But if that’s not enough to make you wash your tools, there are much grosser things to come.

2. VIRAL INFECTIONS

It may sound a little over the top, but dirty make up brushes can really cause viral infections, particularly if you let a friend use your make up. Sharing your brush with another person, no matter if they seem ‘clean’ can complicate the issue by introducing their normal microbes onto your skin, which may not tolerate the “foreign” microbes well, causing a reaction. It could lead to something as small as a minor breakout to a bigger problem such as pink eye or herpes.

1.CREEPY INFESTATIONS

We aren’t 100% sure if this is true. But a 2015 youtube video from Stevie Miller showing her bug infested makeup sponge really really freaked us out. Now we’ve had a look at other people cutting into their beauty blenders and no bugs at all, but it did make us think that despite the required daily cleaning they need, the sponge must get super dirty. Let’s hope Stevie was just messing about with us, but maybe it would be best to get a brand new one instead.

There’s loads of easy ways to clean your brushes, and one way to make your brush cleaning routine easier is with the fantastic Stylpro brush cleaner, it’s a little on the pricey side but we can highly recommend it!
