OZARK
Ozark is Netflix’s dark horse. Think of it as a Breaking Bad meets Fargo. Starring the brilliant Jason Bateman, the series is first and foremost a moody thriller, with a bit of humour and a great cast. Bateman portrays financial planner Marty Byrde, and Laura Linney (you’ll remember her from Love Actually) portrays his wife, a homemaker turned real estate agent Wendy Byrde. Marty suddenly relocates the family from a Chicago suburb to a summer resort called Lake Ozark in Missouri after a money laundering scheme goes wrong, and he must pay off a debt to a Mexican drug lord.
If you’re after an easy watch, Ozark isn’t the programme for you. But if you want something that will fill the Walter White shaped hole in your life, this is it.
GLOW
What’s not to love about the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling!? Glow focuses on a group of ‘unconventional women’ who are looking for a break. When these wannabe actresses respond to an ad for talent, they are inducted into the neon lit, soap-opera splendour of female wrestling.
It’s an easy watch, but don’t let that put you off. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the dark humour and fearlessness when tackling subjects such as anxiety, racism, abortion and the lingering sting of disappointment.
BLACK MIRROR
If you’re on the hunt for a series which will disturb and entertain all at once, look no further. Black Mirror is a clever and deeply satirical anthology drama series which, as the name suggests, mirrors reality with a dark, fantastical twist. From memory implants, to the gratification of social media likes to a dirty deed between a pig and a prime minister (oh, how apt) Black Mirror taps into the general unease of the population, whilst simultaneously exploring the potential dangers of technology.
THE CROWN
If all things Royal floats your boat, then you must watching The Crown. Chronicling the lives of the Windsor family from 1947 to 1955, The Crown is a stunning period drama created by Peter Morgan. It is ambitious in terms of both plot and visuals and has its fair share of political scandal.
Claire Foy is absolutely brilliant as Queen Elizabeth II and won a Golden Globe for her portrayal. The ensemble cast is just as strong, making for compelling performances that will keep you gripped throughout.
STRANGER THINGS
If you haven’t watched the cult phenomenon that is Stranger Things, where have you been for the past year? Don’t worry though because there’s still time for you to binge the first series in time for season 2, which will be released on 27th October.
This sci-fi phenomenon centres on a group of kids in the 80’s, who use walkie-talkie’s to communicate with each other and who just so happen to uncover a massive government supernatural conspiracy. Before you’re put off by the thought of child actors, let us just tell you this lot are absolutely brilliant, particularly Millie Bobbie-Brown who plays the role of Eleven. It has humour and horror balanced to a fine art, and Winona Ryder also stars, so if that’s not enough to make you watch it, we don’t know what is.
