The team behind Bridesmaids has been very busy creating an action comedy film that is set to be one of the funniest films released this summer.

Spy Film Trailer

The film, titled Spy, sees one of our favourite actresses, Mellissa McCarthy, take on the role of a secret agent.

She plays Susan Cooper, a deskbound CIA analyst, who becomes an unsung hero behind one of the agencies dangerous missions when her partner, played by Jude Law, and another top agent (Jason Statham) are compromised.

Alongside these famous names we also see Melissa’s Bridesmaids co-star Rose Byrne as a deadly arms dealer, Miranda Hart as her friend and even 50 Cent playing himself.

Thus far, the film has received positive reviews from critics, with several claiming that McCarthy’s leading performance is her best role to date.

In Variety Justin Chang wrote very highly about the film and its leading lady saying: “Melissa McCarthy gets the funniest, most versatile and sustained comic showcase of her movie career.”

Alongside this, the average rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the film is 7.4/10, meaning that Spy has grossed much higher ratings than McCarthy’s previous films including Tammy and The Identity Thief, which were, quite frankly, bargain-basement material.

Directed and written by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) Spy promises to be just as good as, if not better than, The Heat, where we saw McCarthy paired up with Sandra Bullock.

At a push the film could even be nearly as good as Bridesmaids, but we do regard it as one of our all time favourite films, so Spy will really have to make us laugh out loud!

If nothing else, watching Jude Law on screen for a few hours will be a treat in itself, even though his accent might get a little annoying.

Spy is out in cinemas on June 5.
