It’s that time of the year where everyone is looking to the year ahead and wondering what it will have in store. If you’re a music lover looking for some new inspiration, check out who we tip for big things in 2014!

2014 Music to listen out for

Elli Ingram

Brighton-born Elli Ingram has caused quite a storm since releasing some cover videos on YouTube including tracks by Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper, she is now signed to Island Records and has most recently toured with Chase & Status. Elli released her EP Sober last year and hopefully we will see some new material from her this year. Her sound could be defined as soul/jazz based with hip hop influences, comparable to the likes of Adele and Amy Winehouse. If thats anything to go by, we think she is going to have an amazing year.

Clean Bandit

Clean Bandit are technically not a new band as they released singles in 2012 and 2013, with their highest charting position at no.17 with Mozart’s House. However we believe their new single Rather Be released on 19th January, is set to be their biggest yet. This uplifting and beautifully composed pop song will put a smile on your face, and I defy anyone to not have a dance whilst listening to this. The band formed in 2009 whilst studying at Cambridge University fusing together their classical instruments with electronic beats to create a unique sound.

Chance the Rapper

Chance began to gain recognition in 2013 for his two seminal mixtapes, we expect him to grow and grow in 2014 and beyond. The Chicago-born rapper released his first mixtape whilst still at school and was asked to join Childish Gambino on tour as a result and they continue to work together on musical projects. Last year he released his second mixtape, Acid Rap which pushed him to the front of critics’ minds in 2013. This year he is already confirmed to play some big festivals such as Coachella, we cant wait to see what else he has in store.

Sam Smith

It seems we cant go a day without hearing Sam Smith being talked about, he is most certainly on everybody’s lips. You may recognise his voice from the No. 1 single ‘La La La’ with Naughty Boy or Disclosure’s breakthrough single ‘ Latch’. Sam’s year has already got off to a triumphant start by winning the 2014 BRIT Critics choice award and topping the BBC Sound of 2014 list. He had singing lessons with a jazz singer and learnt to sing Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin classics, which is evident in his amazing vocal range. His current single Money On My Mind is the perfect slice of addictive pop, trust me it will get stuck in your head for days!

Jhene Aiko

Its hard to believe how long Jhene has actually been in the music business, she started out by contributing vocals to B2K releases (remember them?) in 2002 but stepped away from music for a while to focus on finishing her education and raising her daughter. Her first studio album is set for release in May 2014, if you love soulful R&B then watch out for this. Aside from her musical talents we love her awesome attitude, reportedly after being told she would have to ‘sell herself’ by her label, she said “That’s when I decided I would ‘sail’ myself rather than sell myself.”

Sampha

Sampha is an electronic singer-songwriter who came fourth in the BBC Sound of 2014 list. He has collaborated with SBTRKT, Jessie Ware and most recently on Drake’s latest album with Too Much.
He has a simplistic and soulful approach to electronic music which results in lovely, sultry easy-listening music.

Chloe Howl

Chloe is an 18-year old with a bright future. Last year she released her first EP, which received a lot of radio play, particularly her singles ‘No Strings’ and ‘Rumour’. Singing about her school life and break-ups her lyrics are steeped in teenage angst. She is brutally honest in her songs but also in interviews which is a refreshing change from some media-trained younguns. Due to start touring with Ellie Goulding at the end of January and releasing her first album this year, we expect to hear a lot more from Chloe.

Gorgon City

Gorgon City are a two-piece electronic collective consisting of two established producers, Foamo and RackNRuin (aka Kye and Matt). They started collaborating together for fun due to their love of jungle and garage music and it eventually resulted in the forming of Gorgon City. They have a talent for picking talented singer-songwriters and infusing their house and garage influences to create a unique sound. In 2013 they released their first single Real featuring Yasmin, their next single Ready For Your Love featuring MNEK is set for release at the end of January and we think it will follow in the footsteps of big breakthrough releases such as Duke Dumont’s Need U 100%.

George Ezra

George is a Bristol-born singer-songwriter, the 19-year old has a voice beyond his years and his bluesy, gravelly tone is reminiscent of Bob Dylan. He has already played at Glastonbury and supported Lianne Le Havas and Tom Odell on their recent tours. His songs Budapest and Did You Hear The Rain? are currently doing the rounds on the airwaves and we cant wait to hear more from George this year.

Route 94

House prodigy Route 94 spent 2013 making huge waves with countless tracks garnering support from the likes of industry heavyweights Skream, Jackmaster, Annie Mac and more. His tour schedule reads like a must-visit list of the best clubs and festivals in the world it’s clear he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to his DJ sets too. February sees the official re-release of his smash single My Love (ft Jess Glynne), which originally came out on Annie Mac Presents at the end of 2013 to such widespread acclaim that a full release on Virgin Music was an absolute necessity.

So listen out for these music darling and see who you start to hum along to in 2014! Let us know who your listening to @tweetjanes
