Colonia trailer

The first official trailer has dropped for political thriller Colonia, starring Emma Watson as a badass undercover nun on a mission to save her husband.

Based on true events, Colonia is set in Chile in 1973. It tells the story of a couple, Lena (Emma Watson) and Daniel (Daniel Brühl) who have become entangled in a Chilean Military group at a time when there is protests on the streets against dictator General Augusto Pinochet. When Daniel is abducted by DINA (Pinochet’s secret police), Lena goes on mission to try to find and save her husband.

Eventually, she tracks him down at a sealed-off village called “Colonia Dignidad”, which on the outside presents itself as a charitable religious mission run by preacher Paul Schäfer (Michael Nyqvist), but instead is a place where people enter but never emerge. In an attempt to free her husband, she disguises herself as a nun and joins the cult.

Colonia was co-written by Academy Award winner Florian Gallenberger and Torsten Wenzel. Gallenberger was also in the director’s chair for the film, while Benjamin Herrmann produced.

The film premiered recently at the Toronto International Film Festival to mixed reviews. The main critique is the translation from the real-life events onto the big screen, where Gallenberger apparently falls short. Emma Watson, however, was commended for her performance.

Speaking to The Daily Mail about her part in the film, Emma Watson said:”It’s the hardest part I’ve ever had to play. But also the most satisfying. It felt like the right thing to do.”

The 25-year-old is barely recognisable in the film, disguising herself to get into the cult. Instead of the full-face of on point make-up we typically see her wearing, her face is left bare, and yet as always, she looks effortlessly beautiful.

Colonia is set for release in Germany on January 21 2016, a UK and US release date is not yet known, but we’ll keep you updated!
