Who says Valentine’s Day is for couples only? Here at Average Janes we think it’s the perfect time to get together with your single gal pals, let your hair down and have some fun. And you don’t have to shy away from all things romantic either. Here’s our guide to the Top 5 things you could be getting up to on or around V-Day.

Valentine’s Day for couples only? Think again!

1. Girls Night Out

There are endless choices to what you can get up to on a Girls Night Out. Our first pick is bowling, where you can release your inner Pink Lady (eat your heart out Grease fans!) Embrace your Ten Pin bowling shoes, don your 60′s-inspired striped pants and try to avoid that ‘gutter ball’.

If you’re more of a Disco Diva, the dancefloor might be more your thing! And who doesn’t love a night out dancing? You could even turn it into a Karaoke night, just make sure you request all the classics. Our guilty pleasures include Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will Survive’, ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’, Grease Soundtrack favourite ‘Summer Night’s’ or anything by the Spice Girls should get you going! And if Karaoke isn’t your cup of tea, try checking out your local listings and head to a local gig or concert. You never know, your favourite band might be in town. Book your tickets and sing your heart out!

2. Cinema

Now technically we could have included going to the cinema in the Girls Night Out category above, but we think that a trip to the flicks deserves its own slot. You might think that going to the cinema on V-Day is for couples only, but it doesn’t have to be all lovey-dovey! Get the girls together, buy all the popcorn, nachos and ice cream you can carry and lose yourself in the latest blockbusters. We’ve had a look at the latest releases and found some we think you’ll just love. ‘That Awkward Moment’ is out now, and yes, it is a romcom, but don’t let that put you off as the star of the film is the rather yummy Zac Efron! (We thought that might grab your attention!) Laugh along as the story follows three best mates who are at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you ask yourself, “Where is this going?” Something I think we can all relate to!

If you fancy something a bit more gritty then try Oscar nominated film ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ which earned Matthew McConaughey his Golden Globe Award for Best Actor last month. He takes on the role of electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof, who works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease. Now you might think it all sounds a bit depressing, but this film is the talk of tinsel-town and worthy of all the press it’s receiving.

If neither of those films takes your fancy, there’s always a spot of horror with the release of I, Frankenstein. Aaron Eckhart takes on the main role and finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. Action at its best!

3. Girls Night In

If you don’t fancy going out and spending hard earned cash, why not bring the big screen to your living room and get the girls round to watch a film. You could even go old school and make it a Pyjama Party (or as we like to call it these days – a onesie party!) Cosy up with your friends and spend the night with your latest TV crushes. Films that are worth a look include adrenaline junkie favourite Rush (hello topless Chris Hemsworth), which is set in Formula One’s 1970s heyday, when ‘sex was safe and driving was dangerous’; action-packed White House Down (hello almost topless Channing Tatum) which see’s the Step Up hunk spring into action to protect the White House from a terrorist attack; or lose yourself in 1920’s glamour in The Great Gatsby, where fashion was the order of the day as Leonardo DiCaprio (no topless scenes unfortunately) takes on the lead role of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious business magnate who holds extravagant parties. If we’re honest, anything starring Leo is a must-see on a Girl’s Night In. And why not paint your nails, throw on a face-mask and make it a real girlie night in to remember!

4. Spa Day

We all deserve to treat ourselves every now and again, so it’s a great time to take some much-needed time out and enjoy some girlie treatments to relieve the stress of everyday life. Spoil yourself with a day full of massages, facials and general pampering loveliness! If you book a group package deal it works out even cheaper!

5. Mini-break

This one does what it says on the tin! No need for much explanation, as running away to the countryside with your best girls is the ultimate experience. Areas that are worth a visit include the Cotswolds for the views, The Lake District for the beauty, and Shakespeare Country (Stratford-Upon Avon) for the history. If you fancy booking something a little further afield, hop on the Eurostar and visit Brussels for the culture or Disneyland Paris for the fun.

I’m sure one of the above choices will take your fancy, and the irony in all this is one of these activities could result in you meeting the man of your dreams! Now that really would make it a girlie adventure to remember!
