Here at Average Janes, we love a good bake off, sing off, sew off and cook off. Before GBBO returns to our weekly television programming, there is another head-to-head contest that will hit our television screens: the Rio 2016 Olympic heptathlon battle between our Great British female athletes: Jessica Ennis-Hill vs. Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
It’s an exciting contest. There has not been a Great British athletics encounter of this kind since the 1980s, when Seb Coe and Steve Ovett did battle over the middle distances on the track. The contest gave a lot of promotion to the 800m and 1500m events that Coe and Ovett were competing in.
Rio 2016: Great Britain’s Heptathlon Battle
This August, we’re faced with similar competition stakes from our female athletes.
Starting on Friday 12th August, both Jess and Katarina will compete in 7 track and field events, with their performances converted into points. The events will include hurdles, high jump and javelin, to name a few. The final event, 800m, to be raced on Sunday 14th August, will reveal which heptathlete has the most points and will be crowned Olympic Champion.
Both of our British girls have a great chance of standing on the Olympic podium. Jess is aiming to defend her London 2012 Olympic title, in what she has said will most likely be her last Olympic Games. Katarina, at 23 years old, will have learnt from a disappointing 2015 World Championship performance, aiming to showcase her fullest potential at her second Olympic Games.
To showcase just how close these two GB athletes are in performance, take a look at their personal bests in all 7 of the heptathlon events in the table below.
With mere milliseconds between many of their times, it’s set to be a close contest!
