Charlie Hunnam cast as Christian Grey
After months of speculation of who will take on the huge (ahem) role of Christian Grey, author EL James has confirmed that Brit actor Charlie Hunnam will take on the role.
13/10/2013 Update: Charlie Hunnam Quits as Christian Grey in 50 Shades film. Apparently due to ‘timing issues’ rumours are that Charlie will no longer play Christian, though we expect a replacement to be named in the coming days. Watch this space!
Announcing it on twitter earlier today the author wrote “The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Newcastle born Hunnam, 33, has appeared in films such as Cold Mountain, Children of Men and most recently, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. However, he is maybe best known for his role as Nathan in the TV series Queer As Folk.
Also officially cast is Dakota Johnson, 23, as Anastasia Steele. Daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith the girl has credentials! Best known for supporting roles in The Five Year Engagement and The Social Network. James tweeted earlier, “I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Producers of The Social Network, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti have been handpicked by James and filmmaker Sam-Taylor-Wood will direct.
Our thoughts on the casting of Mr Grey? Whoever was cast there was always going to be disappointment for some as the Mr Greys in every womans head is very different. However we’re just not sure Hunnman has the elegance or charm to pull it off (so to speak). We hope he proves us wrong. And we will be waiting with bated breath from now until the titles role.
Johnson on the other hand seems to us a good fit for the role of our favourite sexually naive student Ana, and the fact she is relatively unknown we think will work in her favour. We hope she moulds on-screen Ana into the girl-turned-woman we all hope she will be.
What do you think about the castings? Tell us how you feel! @tweetjanes
Fifty Shades of Grey is due for release in the US in August 2014.
