Johnny in-Depp-th

With the announcement that he is “probably not too far away” from quitting the “insane” business of acting nicely coinciding with the UK release of The Lone Ranger this Friday we thought we should do the right thing in highlighting one of our all time favourite Men. The enigma that is, Mr Johnny Depp.

Born in Kentucky, US in 1963 Johnny started his career in the Fox television series 21 Jump Street, and was later cast in his first major film role in the 1984 cult horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. He went on to star in classic films such as Platoon and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and in 1990, he undertook the title role of the Tim Burton film, Edward Scissorhands. It was this film’s success that began his long association with Burton, and they went on to make films such as Sleepy Hollow, Sweeny Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together.

There are too many to mention all, but further films go on to include, the incredible true story of George Jung in Blow, where he starred alongside the incredible Penelope Cruz, The Rum Diary (where he met current girlfriend Amber Heard) and Dark Shadows, film version of the 1966 gothic ABC Series.

However, I think we will all agree when we say, it was Captain Jack Sparrow that stole our hearts.

The hugely successful Pirates of the Carribean franchise has seen Mr Depp reprise the beloved character 4 times, with another apparently in the pipeline for release in 2015. And will Captain Jack ever get old, we think not.

The star himself turned 50 on the 9th June and when asked how he felt about it, he simply said “Well, it could be worse, I could not have turned 50. Now that would be a real drag.”

Talking of his recent announcement that he may quit acting in the near future, a fellow thespian heavyweight joined the conversation. The distinguished legend, Christopher Lee said “He is one of the major talents in the industry, and, God knows, we need them. Johnny is a star – and that’s not a term I ever use lightly. There are not a lot of them around today. It makes me sad that such a genuinely talented person is considering giving it all up.”

Johnny Depp. The ever intriguing face of many a weird and wonderful character. His chiseled features and smouldering persona gets us every time and we can’t not continue to love him.

With or without dreadlocks.
