Jack O’Connell? Oh yes!

Following the release of Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken trailer last week, we thought it was about time to dedicate a post to the absolutely gorgeous Jack O’Connell, the young actor who is taking on the starring role in the film.

The 23 year-old British actor is best known for playing Pukey Nicholls in This Is England, a drama film centered around the English skinhead subculture in 1983. Even though he played a rather minor character, the film was O’Connell’s big break into the industry and led him into other roles, in both film and television typically playing the bad boy character.

In 2008, O’Connell was awarded a role of James Cook for the third and fourth installment of the British teen drama Skins. Once again he adopted the role of the rebellious teenager and was highly praised for his acting efforts, winning the Best Actor award at the 2010 TV Choice awards. The Skins producers also asked O’Connell to return as James Cook in a one-off episode for the seventh and final series of Skins.

He revisited the film scene in 2009, playing the role of Marky alongside Michael Caine in the British crime thriller Harry Brown. The film received generally positive reviews, with O’Connell once again praised for his talented portrayal of his character. Subsequently, he appeared in the music video for End Credits by Chase & Status, the song released from the film’s soundtrack.

His latest endeavor will no doubt catapult him into Hollywood stardom as he takes on the starring role in Angelina Jolie’s new film Unbroken. The film, based on a screenplay which has been rewritten by Joel and Ethan Coen, follows the story of real-life, American World War II hero, Louis Zamperini. The latest trailer for Unbroken shows a very dashing looking O’Connell, in a role very different to what we have seen before, so it will be interesting to see him steering away from the bad boy persona. The film is set for release Christmas 2014.

As for the future, O’Connell is set to star in Tulip Fever, a 17th Century romance film adapted from a novel by Deborah Moggach. Filming is currently taking place in several spots around Norfolk and Suffolk including Norwich Cathedral, Holkham and Kentwell Hall. The cast has a few big names including Christoph Waltz, Dame Judi Dench and Cara Delevingne, we cannot wait to see our new favourite young actor alongside these greats!
