Whether you’re attending a summer wedding, family BBQ or just want daytime make-up that lasts through this heatwave, these are our top products for a subtle smokey eye for Summer.
Face
In this hot weather, applying our usual make-up, especially foundation, can feel heavy on our previously sun-starved faces. Step in Bobbi Brown tinted moisturiser (£29). Providing light coverage, hydrating skin and smoothing out any sunburn you may have suffered in the recent heat. It’s available in seven shades and contains SPF 15 to protect your skin from further sun damage.
If you’ve been working on your tan, you’ll want to add some colour over the tinted moisturiser with a bronzer. We know many Janes shy away from this beauty product, fearing the dreaded orange glow. So here are our top tips for a subtle, sunkissed (not tangoed!) look:
Go for a shade slightly warmer than your natural skin tone (we recommend getting a skin match at a counter) – we used Smashbox Bronze Lights in Sunkissed Matte (£23)
Apply a small amount using a brush (we love Real Techniques Powder Brush, £12.99) – starting in the areas where the light naturally catches your face: brow line, cheeks and nose
Finish by a sweeping a quick ‘three’ across both sides of your face: start at the outer brow line, swoop into the apples of your cheeks, and then again into your chin.
Eyes
Layer a neutral base, such as Mac Eye Shadow in Shroom (£12.50), over the lid and socket. Give your eyes a bit of smoky summer glamour by brushing a dusky metal-grey into the crease of the eye – try Laura Mercier Sateen Eye Colour in Pewter or Sable (£18.50). For a final lift, we love Bobbi Brown’s Sparkle Eye Shadows (£20) which give a light-catching shimmer – the soft pink Ballet shade works perfectly with the grey. Blend a tiny amount over the whole lid.
Finish with a flick of mascara to complete this subtly smoky daytime look. Max Factor 2000 Calorie (£5.99) adds volume without clumping.
Lips
Add the final touch with a dusky lip shade, opt for matt rather than shimmer to contrast with the eyes. Rimmel Moisture Renew in Rose Sorbet (£6.29) is gorgeous – a dewy summer rose to complete this elegant daytime look.
