Is London life getting a bit too much? We understand completely. Sometimes the hustle and bustle of the city doesn’t seem all that great. So before you end up punching the bloke who stole your seat on the tube, why not plan a day trip away instead.
Now, not all of us can pull a ‘Made in Chelsea’ and head to the South of France for the day, but don’t worry. We’ve found some very affordable day trips with the added bonus of the fact they’re only 1 hour from London.
CAMBRIDGE
A 44 minute train ride from King’s Cross will take you into the heart of Cambridge. There’s plenty of things to do when you get there: wander about, hire a bike, admire the beauty of the cobbled streets, and/or have a tipple of one of the city’s many pubs.
Of course, there is one activity, come rain or shine that you definitely have to try when in Cambridge and that’s punting down the River Cam. You can either have an experienced punter take you down the river or if you’re feeling brave punt the boat yourself! If you do opt for the latter, you might want to bring a spare set of dry clothes…
RICKMANSWORTH
One great thing about London is its fantastic transport links. If you’re after a proper country pub but don’t want to be forking out for a train fare, don’t worry, London’s 270 tube stations means that there’s loads in reach which are easily accessible just with an Oyster card.
Rickmansworth, a small town in south-west Hertfordshire, is one of these spots. If you don’t mind spending an hour sat on the metropolitan line, it’s definitely worth it. When you’re there, check out these two beautiful pubs The Feathers and The Coach and Horses. Both have mouthwatering menus and if you happen to head down on Sunday, you’re in for a treat thanks to their tasty roasts.
BRIGHTON
If the seaside is more your thing, just an hour from London is popular day-trip destination of Brighton. It’s the perfect place to get away from the crowds of the capital and stroll along the cobbled beach with a bunch of friends or a loved one. Head to the promenade for a classic fish and chips lunch and then wander through the lanes to find some unique antique goodies. If you’re feeling in the mood for some sport, there’s volleyball on the beach, but that might be better trying out in the summer months.
The train from Victoria to Brighton takes just 54 minutes, or if you have an extra 6 to spare London Bridge to Brighton takes around an hour.
