Oscar Nominations 2017

oscar-statues

The 2017 Oscar nominations have been announced, and we couldn’t be happier with the choices! This year the nominees reflect a refreshing amount of diversity thanks to films such as Fences, Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Lion quashing the #OscarsSoWhite controversy of recent years.

Oscars favourite La La Land did as well as predicted, scooping 14 nominations – the same amount Titanic got way back in 1997. The number of nominations, which includes two in the same Best Original Song category, makes the Damian Chazelle-directed film the most Oscar-nominated musical in history. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are also big favourites to win Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

La La Land also remains the favourite to win Best Picture, winning odds of 9/2 from bookmakers William Hill. Although it has some very tough competition from the likes of Moonlight, Lion and Arrival. Sadly Jackie didn’t quite make the cut.

“Arrival” also emerged as one of the most-honored films, with support in eight categories, but its star, Amy Adams, failed to receive a nod for best actress. Our favourite to win is Natalie Portman though, for her role playing the former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Our predictions for winners of the top categories in the 89th Academy Awards include:
Best Picture- La La Land
Best Actress- Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Best Supporting Actress- Viola Davis (Fences)
Best Actor- Ryan Gosling (La La Land)
Best Supporting Actor- Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Best Director- Damien Chazelle (La La Land)

All bets are on!

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 26 February, 2017.
