From a real life biopic to arguably the best rom-com ever, it wasn’t easy to cut the list down to five of Roberts’ best films, but check out some of our favourites…
5. MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING
We kick off with this classic from 1997, wow that makes us feel old. Julia takes on Julianne Potter, a 27-year-old New York City restaurant critic, who receives a call from her lifelong friend Michael O’Neal to say he’s getting married. But, in college, the two made an agreement that if neither of them were married by the time they turned 28, they would marry each other. Time is nearly running out for Julianne, but if she says a little prayer (geddit) she might end up hitched.
Fun fact: a Chinese remake of the same name was released in China on 5th August 2016.
4. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
With an ensemble cast like this one and Meryl Streep at its helm, it’s unsurprising why August: Osage County reaped up awards. For those of you yet to see it, Julia Roberts plays the daughter of Violet Weston (Meryl Streep) who along with other dysfunctional family members reunite into the familial house when Violet’s husband (Sam Shepard) suddenly disappears.
The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Margo Martindale, Dermot Mulroney, and Julianne Nicholson.
For their performances in the film, Streep and Roberts received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
3. NOTTING HILL
In at number three, is the rom-com classic, Notting Hill. There’s so much to love about this film, from the top-notch performances from both Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, to the soundtrack with some absolute tunes on.
The film was very well received by critics and became the highest grossing film released in 1999. It won a BAFTA and others including a British Comedy Award and a Brit Award for – surprise, surprise – the soundtrack.
2. ERIN BROCKOVICH
She’s not all about great rom-coms though, Julia Roberts really proved her acting talent taking on the real-life Erin Brockovich. The film is a dramatisation of the true story about Erin’s life, an unemployed single mother of three who fought against the energy corporation Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
For her outstanding performance in the lead role, Roberts won the Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and various critics awards for Best Actress.
1. PRETTY WOMAN
In the top spot is the film which made us fall in love with Julia Roberts in the first place, Pretty Woman. If you haven’t seen it, where on earth have you been?!
It’s the ultimate rom-com, so if you’re looking for a film for girls night, this is the one.
